ABOUT US
At HEART (Humane Education, Advocacy, and Rescue Tokushima), we have been dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and preventing animal suffering in Tokushima and across Japan since 2006. Our mission is to create a better future for animals through compassionate care, community education, and proactive prevention efforts.
Since our founding, HEART has been at the forefront of addressing critical animal welfare issues, including the overpopulation of feral dogs and community cats, as well as the plight of animals at risk of destruction in the prefectural animal control facility. As a leader in animal welfare, HEART has paved the way for Tokushima’s transition to a no-kill approach.
Through our low-cost spay and neuter clinic, operated for nearly five years, we have significantly reduced unwanted litters and alleviated the strain on local shelters.
Guided by the belief that every animal deserves to live free from fear and suffering, we are committed to creating lasting change. Join us in making a difference—one animal, one community, one day at a time.
HEART was founded by Canadian Susan Mercer.
